Air Berlin was a German airline that operated passenger flights across Europe and international destinations. At its peak, it was Germany’s second-largest airline after Lufthansa and one of the major carriers in Europe.
Founded in 1978 as Air Berlin USA, the airline initially served West Berlin during the Cold War. After German reunification, it became a German-owned airline and expanded its network. Air Berlin later joined the Oneworld airline alliance in 2012 before filing for insolvency and ceasing operations in 2017.
