Banana Republic is an American upscale clothing and accessories retailer owned by Gap Inc..

It was founded in 1978 by Mel and Patricia Ziegler as Banana Republic Travel & Safari Clothing Company.

In 1983, Gap acquired the company, shortened its name to Banana Republic, and rebranded the stores with a more upscale image. In the 2020s, under VP of Design Nicole Wiesmann, the brand has been repositioned through luxury-inspired editorial campaigns and higher-end garments, drawing comparisons to labels such as Ralph Lauren and The Row.
