Founded on October 2, 1998, it was formed through the merger of four government-owned banks that failed during the 1998 financial crisis, as part of an Indonesian government restructuring effort.

On January 14, 2008, Bank Mandiri recolored its waving ribbon to gold and moved into the new ‘Mandiri’ blue wordmark.
It was designed by the Indonesian branch of Brand Union (then Superunion, now Design Bridge and Partners).
