Founded in 1901 as one of the AL’s eight charter franchises, the team has played at Fenway Park since 1912. The name “Red Sox” chosen around 1908 by owner John I. Taylor, was inspired by earlier teams called the Boston Red Stockings, including the Boston Braves (now the Atlanta Braves).
