Founded in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association (ABA), the team began as the New Jersey Americans, moved to Long Island in 1968, and was renamed the New York Nets.
After joining the NBA in 1976, the team relocated to Brooklyn in 2012, adopting its current name.
