The Detroit Pistons, founded in 1937 as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons in Fort Wayne, Indiana, are an American professional basketball team based in Detroit, Michigan, competing in the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Initially a semi-professional team, they turned professional in 1941, joining the National Basketball League (NBL) and winning championships in 1944 and 1945. Relocating to Detroit in 1957, the Pistons are known for their storied history, including three NBA championships (1989, 1990, 2004).
