The New Orleans Pelicans are a professional basketball team based in New Orleans, competing in the NBA.

Originally founded as the New Orleans Hornets in the 2002–03 season after George Shinn relocated the Charlotte Hornets to New Orleans, the team was rebranded as the Pelicans in 2013.

New Orleans has a rich basketball history, having hosted the New Orleans Buccaneers in the ABA from 1967 to 1970, which moved to Memphis due to inadequate facilities and poor performance. The city later gained an NBA expansion team in June 1974, named the New Orleans Jazz, honoring the city’s jazz music heritage, before it relocated to Utah in 1979.
