In July 2019, Volkswagen announced plans for a significant global logo revamp, following a minor update in the U.S. in June.
The new logo was unveiled on September 9, 2019, at the Frankfurt Motor Show, alongside the ID.3 hatchback. Inspired by the 1967 design, it features a thinner circle and “VW” symbol, with the bottom of the “W” detached from the circle for the first time.
The rebrand introduced a new sound motif with a “Volkswagen” voiceover for advertising and vehicle startups. The logo rolled out in Europe immediately after the reveal, reached Asia in October 2019, and was fully adopted in the Americas, particularly the U.S., by April 8, 2020, after limited initial appearances.
