Primus is an American rock band formed in El Sobrante, California, in 1984. The band is best known for its eclectic style, blending elements of funk, metal, and experimental rock.
As of March 2025, the lineup features Les Claypool (bass, vocals), Larry “Ler” LaLonde (guitar), and John Hoffman (drums).
Founded by Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, the early group was later joined by drummer Jay Lane, though both Huth and Lane departed before the band’s official recording career began in 1989. They were replaced by LaLonde and drummer Tim “Herb” Alexander, cementing the lineup that carried Primus into mainstream recognition.
