Princeton University is a private Ivy League research university located in Princeton, New Jersey, United States.

Established in 1746 as the College of New Jersey in Elizabeth, it is the fourth-oldest higher education institution in the U.S. and one of nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution.

Relocating to Newark in 1747 and then to its current Mercer County campus in Princeton in 1756, it became a university in 1896 and was renamed Princeton University.
