The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) is an American nonprofit organization headquartered in San Francisco, California. It is best known for hosting Wikipedia, one of the most visited websites in the world, along with a range of other open knowledge projects.
Founded in 2003 by Jimmy Wales, the foundation was created to support and fund Wikipedia and related wiki-based initiatives, which were previously operated by the for-profit company Bomis. In addition to Wikipedia, it manages multiple collaborative projects and supports the development of MediaWiki, the open-source software that powers these platforms.
