The Australian Football League (AFL) is the premier professional competition for Australian rules football and the highest level of the sport in Australia. It was originally established as the Victorian Football League (VFL) in 1896, beginning competition in 1897 after breaking away from the Victorian Football Association.

As the league expanded beyond Victoria into other Australian states during the 1980s, it was renamed the Australian Football League in 1990.

Today, the AFL features 18 teams across five Australian states, with a 19th team from Tasmania scheduled to join the competition in 2028. The season runs from March to September and culminates in the AFL Grand Final, traditionally held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
