Brown University is a private Ivy League research university located in Providence, Rhode Island, United States.

Established on September 15, 1764, as the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, it is the seventh-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. From 1764 to 1804, it was known as Rhode Island College.

One of the nine colonial colleges chartered before the American Revolution, Brown was the first U.S. college to specify in its charter that admission and instruction should be open to students regardless of religious affiliation.
