The English Football League (EFL) is a professional football league for clubs from England and Wales, originally founded in 1888 as the Football League, making it the world’s oldest football league.
It served as England’s top-tier league until 1992, when the top 22 clubs formed the Premier League. Rebranded as the EFL starting with the 2016–17 season, it now oversees the Championship, League One, and League Two.
