MariaDB is an open-source, community-developed fork of the MySQL relational database management system (RDBMS), created to ensure the software remains free under the GNU General Public License (GPL).

The project was launched in 2009 by the original MySQL developers, led by Michael “Monty” Widenius, following concerns about MySQL’s acquisition by Oracle Corporation.

Fully compatible with MySQL, MariaDB maintains a strong focus on performance, reliability, and open development, while also introducing its own enhancements and features. It is now supported by the MariaDB Foundation and MariaDB plc, which provide commercial services and continued innovation for enterprise use.
