MySQL is an open-source relational database management system (RDBMS). Its name combines “My” the name of co-founder Michael Widenius’ daughter, and “SQL” short for Structured Query Language.
MySQL uses SQL to store, organize, query, and manage data, and is widely used in web applications, content management systems, business software, and server environments. MySQL is currently developed by Oracle.
Following Oracle’s acquisition of Sun Microsystems in 2010, Widenius forked MySQL to create MariaDB.
