Air Astana, the flag carrier of Kazakhstan, is an airline headquartered in Almaty.

Established in 2001 and commencing operations in 2002, it was initially planned as a domestic airline but expanded with BAE Systems‘ involvement at the request of then-President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Praised by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation in 2012 for outperforming most start-up carriers in its first decade, Air Astana operates domestic and international flights across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.
