Founded in 1966, the club competes in the Süper Lig, the top division of Turkish football, and plays its home matches at the 34,829-seat Kocaeli Stadium.
Kocaelispor has enjoyed several strong periods in Turkish football, with its best league finish being fourth place in the 1992–93 season. The club has also won the Turkish Cup twice, in 1997 and 2002, and has competed in European tournaments.
